PURPOSE STATEMENT

 

The job of behavior interventionist paraprofessional was established for the purpose/s of providing support to assist students who have moderate to intensive behavior and/or mental health needs.  This position may also support the implementation of behavioral programs and intensive behavior intervention services for students with disabilities.  Establishes effective rapport with students and motivates students to develop appropriate social skills and attitudes leading toward improved behavior in order to foster greater independence in the student.  Professional relations are developed and maintained with other staff. 

 

This job reports to the Principal and the Board Certified Behavior Analyst

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.  Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:  strong interpersonal skills to work with variety of teachers, principals, parents, students and staff members; strong organizational and time management skills

 

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multistep written and oral instructions.  Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:  safety practices and procedures; age-appropriate student activities; conflict resolution; knowledge of and experience with the direct implementation of behavior management techniques with both groups and individuals;

 

ABILITY is required to build and maintain relationships with students; ability and desire to work patiently and compassionately with students who have challenging behaviors (e.g., yelling, biting, hitting, kicking, pinching); ability to work independently and with a team; ability to communicate thoughts and ideas effectively to other members of your team; ability to manage multiple tasks;  ability to schedule activities; gather and/or collate data; and use basic job-related equipment; must have ability to problem solve and to implement variety of academic and behavioral programs, under behavior specialists/teachers supervision; ability to remain calm under stressful conditions

 

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the organization’s services.

 

 

Physical Demands

Moderately heavy work: Exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The work also requires the following physical abilities in order to perform the essential job functions: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity and walking.

 

Working Conditions

Employees in this position deal with crisis situations that require them to make major decisions involving people, resources, and property.

 

 

Salary Grade

This position is paid on the classified salary schedule; Aide II (Lane 5) upon successful completion of the RBT competency assessment and exam.  Experience up to 5 years is recognized for step placement, with a maximum step placement of step 6 to begin.
